Teach English Vietnam

Vietnam might be the place for you if you want to teach English. It has a crying need for teachers, so the teaching English in Vietnam might be a good option. However, there are few opportunities to teach English in Vietnam except as a volunteer. The volunteer experience can sometimes require that you pay as much as $3,000 for a semester-long opportunity, and the programs' organizers offer suggestions for raising funds. The prospects for a salary when choosing the Teach English Vietnam-route are quite slim. Reputable schools are constantly seeking qualified applicants to join their permanent faculties, preferably on a long-term basis, but there are few other chances to teach English in Vietnam for pay. The people of Vietnam, who could greatly enhance their earning potential locally and in the world market by studying English, rarely have tuition money. Perhaps when the economy picks up a bit, but not yet.

The volunteer opportunities are plentiful. Faith-based groups (that recent euphemism for missionary and humanitarian efforts) advertise programs in Vietnam for teaching English, but they also often require that you come up with the money somehow or help them in fundraising efforts.

I'm not saying you shouldn't look to Vietnam for chances to teach English as a foreign language. I'm just saying that you shouldn't expect to be paid for it. Volunteer work can be rewarding and uplifting for you and for those you teach. Widespread volunteer effort is needed to pick up the Vietnamese economy. And volunteering to teach overseas is a form of studying in its own right. Who would dare say that a prolonged observation of the local economy and people isn't educational and valuable? You might not get college credit for it, but it is sure to be instructive.

A few more things to consider (these are meant to dissuade the weak and encourage the beneficent):

  • Few colleges teach Vietnamese yet, so don't expect much help there.
  • Accommodations are likely to be far from luxurious and probably not highly hygienic. Be prepared to suffer a few locally-gained illnesses along the way.
  • Check with your school. Just maybe you can arrange for some credit for you stay in Vietnam through Independent Study if you develop a sound academic outline and fulfil it while there.
  • At the very least, a volunteer stint teaching English in Vietnam will make you wiser.
