A little income can go a long way toward financing and prolonging a stay overseas. You can teach English overseas and benefit both you and the local populace. It can be a ticket to an experience abroad at reduced cost, while promoting international understanding. There are many opportunities for those who want to teach English abroad. Most, far and away, are programs for volunteers in remote, disadvantaged places. These can be valuable, life-enhancing experiences, and they can be accomplished at little or no cost if you're good at fund-raising, but they don't' come with a pay check. Some colleges, through their study abroad programs, can offer help in securing work teaching English overseas through their learning centers, where it's legal, practical, and helpful to students. Professional study abroad programs might be able to do the same. Ask the organizers well in advance. In most cases, you'll find that work and study don't mix well abroad, usually due to local issues. Often, then, seeking the opportunity to teach English as a foreign language overseas means stepping out of school for a time and gaining real-life experience. You may be able to arrange college credit for the experience if you present a plan, and stick to it, and get prior approval from the university. Many opportunities can be found on the Web for teaching English overseas. Check them out thoroughly, and learn all you can from past participants. Most aren't all they pretend to be. Many unscrupulous are looking to take you money from you and have no remorse over leaving you stranded and hurting. So how do you find a legitimate, reliable opportunity to teach English, make a difference, and maybe earn a bit? As I said, through studying carefully and exhaustively before you commit.
