Teach English in China

China has a booming economy and a great desire to take part in global commerce. There are many opportunities now to teach English in China. In fact, for teaching English, China has the greatest need (in numbers) of any country overseas. The total population is well over 1,000,000,000. Many of them want to know English, and their government is trying to make it happen. There just aren't enough teachers to answer the demand. There are so many Chinese studying English, and so many more wanting to, that anyone with a basic knowledge and a textbook is given a classroom.

Teaching English in China takes many forms. In the poorer provinces, government agencies are trying to bring English to everyone and are opening the doors of every school to volunteers. Be advised that "volunteer" actually means that you pay for the opportunity to foster international understanding and represent Western culture.

Here are some of the principal programs now seeking "volunteers":

In the wealthier areas and the large, industrial cities, paid teaching positions are available by the hundreds in well-established schools and programs. See these sites:

  • ChinaTEFL, a site hosted by Zhejiang University - Chinatefl.com.
  • TeachCN - Teachcn.com.
  • Teach-in-China - Teach-in-china.cn - We urge you to see this site mainly to prove that good English is a necessary part of the deal. This may a legitimate program, but it needs some native English editing.

Colleges and universities in China are forming partnerships with schools in the English-speaking world to bring in faculty and trained instructors. Check with your school before choosing to follow the Teach English China-route. They may already have a program for teaching and studying in China. If not, you might suggest it, or even facilitate it.
