Study Abroad Mexico

America's southern neighbor offers many wonderful study abroad opportunities. Study abroad in Mexico is convenient, relatively inexpensive, and just as foreign and potentially exotic as any experience overseas. Besides, the programs vary greatly in content and setting. There's sure to be a study opportunity that's right for you among the many Study Abroad Mexico programs.

Mexico is a smorgasbord. Mexico City comes to mind immediately, and there are many fine and reputable study abroad opportunities there. But don't overlook Guadalajara, Puebla, Merida, Torreon, Monterrey, and a dozen other cities that offer variety in climate, setting, and cost. There are programs for studying art, music, Spanish (of course), business, ecology, architecture, archaeology, and just about anything else of interest to you. You can study in the mountains, in the desert, or on the beach.

Most major universities have study abroad relationships with colleges in Mexico or operate their own study abroad centers there. If your school doesn't have a study abroad program in Mexico, you should be able to find something that will transfer credits back home (that's something you'll want to check out before you sign up). Refine a Web search until you find the programs that fit you best.

I've spent several years in Mexico, and I have some favorite memories to pass along to anyone considering a Mexican study abroad experience:

  • The Food: You'll only find Tex-Mex food in the far north, but Mexican food is vibrant and flavorful wherever you go. Studying is achieved best over a plate of steaming tamales. And don't be afraid to try out the fried worms and corn fungus.
  • The Climate: Mexico offers variety, but all are variations on "comfortable."
  • Health & Sanitation: Take along a reliable anti-diarrhea medicine for use until you get used to the local critters. Mexico is abroad, meaning foreign.
  • Life Outside the Classroom: Get out to a soccer match or folklore show. Mexico abounds in cultural experiences that you shouldn't miss.
