What I wouldn't give to study abroad in Madrid! It's Ground Zero for the Spanish language, the home of the Real Academia de la Lengua Castellana - The Royal Academy of the Spanish Language. It was where Columbus pitched his plans for exploration, the seat of the Holy Roman Empire, home to Ferdinand and Isabel . . . and now it can be your home, too. Study Abroad Madrid programs can put you there. You can't go wrong with a reputable program in Madrid. The content and cost is sure to be of high quality, if only due to the great competition for students. Dwell on selection and not on content. Studying abroad in Madrid begins with an investigation of the many programs based there. There are an incredible number of programs, mainly in one of three categories:
Each category contains reliable, professional programs. Each category also contains some duds. Check things out thoroughly before committing to a single program. Don't just read the testimonials on the program's website, which will always be positive. Ask the Madrid program's organizers if they can give you the e-mail address of former students. Better still, do a thorough Web search for negative feedback. Don't be discouraged by one or two criticisms; there are always a few disgruntled voices. But if you see repeated comments like, "Studying there was the pits" or "They ripped me off", move to the next interesting program. Many colleges have programs, or recommend programs, in Madrid. If getting college credit for your study abroad is important, lean toward that. But you can also go to the program you want after making sure that the credits will transfer. Another thing to consider in a program in Madrid is the part out of Madrid. The better programs include interesting and valuable tours and day trips to sites of interest, which are many.
