Study Abroad Latin America programs abound.

Study abroad programs in Latin America can be found through your school's guidance office, or School of International Studies, or Department of Spanish. Check with them for brochures. Ask if they know of students on campus who have been through a program you're interested in. Search the Web, deeply, and communicate with the various programs. See how they respond. Check out how long they've been in operation. Search the Web for feedback, or ask the programs to refer you to past participants, knowing that they will only lead you to positive feedback.

The principal benefits of studying in Latin America are:

  • Cost. Relative to European programs, Latin American programs are quite cheap, with the possible exception of study in major capitals.
  • Applicability. Spanish is spoken widely, and Hispanic populations are growing throughout the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Climate. Much of Latin America is tropical or sub-tropical. Studying is often done outdoors.
  • Fun. The music, color, and rhythm of life in Latin America are refreshing and invigorating. While your course of study may be intense, life outside the classroom is mellow and enjoyable. Check out programs of interest for side trips, tours, proximity to beaches, etc.
  • Security. So far (knock on wood), Latin America is low in the kinds of attacks we've seen in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. In most of Latin America, the greatest threat to public safety is traffic.
