Study abroad in Ireland: what a sweet idea! If you want studying abroad, Ireland is a refreshing opportunity. A multitude of Study Abroad Ireland programs offer courses in literature, history, art, dance, and more, in several Irish cities. Ireland is a step off the beaten path, a study in richness. Study abroad in Ireland isn't tourism, but it isn't just study either. Take the chance to immerse yourself in the culture of the Emerald Isle, studying life as much as you study any other subject. A Web search yields a ton of study abroad opportunities in Ireland. There are many reliable, well-established programs offered by reputable firms. Most are in Dublin, Galway, Cork, Limerick, and other principal cities. Some are a bit more rural. Choosing among them is a question of comparison shopping. Look for value and for features. I like the look of the AIFS programs in Limerick (Aifsabroad.com). You can study Gaelic and Irish literature in addition to Political Science with and Irish focus. The Irish American Cultural Institute, in operation since 1975, has a summer program for teenagers. Check it out at Iaci-usa.org. It features home stay, classes in Gaelic, and many field trips. Boston College has a comprehensive program including study of dance and music, but they require that participants first take a prep course in Boston. Still, it's worthy of consideration (BC.edu). In addition to the professional firms with study centers in Ireland, many colleges have study abroad relationships with schools and academies in Ireland. This is the best way to make sure you get college credit for your study abroad experience.
