Study Abroad in Costa Rica

Study abroad in Costa Rica is a smart alternative to pricey European destinations. Costa Rica is relatively safe and inexpensive. It is thick with history, Hispanic culture, and fine universities. The out-of-classroom experiences are exotic, including rain forests, bio-preserves, and active volcanoes, not forgetting quiet plazas and colorful marketplaces. Costa Rica study abroad programs can get you back to nature like nothing else.

Costa Rica has reputable universities and academies, and there are many well-established study abroad programs in Costa Rica though not as many as in the big name places overseas (so you might have to piece something together to fit your personal interests). Imagine combining an English-teaching opportunity or humanitarian effort with a self-crafted study program (this could also reduce the costs considerably). Most colleges are happy to give credit for true learning, no matter how it is gained. Studying demographic or sociological topics can be done firsthand, for credit, if the topic of study is well defined and your professors are on board. Check with the people in Independent Study, to make sure you get your credit hours.

As for the language, you can study classical Spanish in San Jose, Costa Rica as well as you can in Madrid. Yes, you can. In fact, the isolated, less industrialized nature of the place makes it possible to study facets of the history and development of Spanish easier than in many places overseas. As a bonus, the Costa Rican dialect offers a variety of colorful and quaint colloquialisms that will turn you into an adopted "Tico" in no time.

SpanishAbroad.com offers many Spanish language programs in nine locations in Costa Rica. I love the variety. See Spanishabroad.com.

CIEE has ecological programs, taught largely in English, which put you in a rainforest bio station: www.ciee.org.
