Study abroad in Barcelona isn't just study abroad in Spain because Barcelona is to Spain as Quebec is to Canada. In other words, it is everything you expect of Spain, but with a bonus culture thrown in. Barcelona study abroad programs give you a strong taste of Spain and a fascinating look at Cataluña and the Catalán language and culture. While many professional study abroad programs can get you to Barcelona, I like Solbarcelona.com because it specializes in Barcelona only, offers lodging packages with local families (in addition to dormitory plans), and welcomes entire families. Few programs offer classes in Catalán. One exception is the Barcelona summer program through Harvard University. As the name suggests, it ain't cheap, and no colleges offer transfer credit (though there are Spanish classes for credit). How exclusive is that?! Studying to learn something that few outsiders know, just to know it, pure and simple. Looking for an authentic Barcelona experience untainted by the visiting hordes? Check out the "El Casal" School in Barcelona. (www.languageschoolsguide.com) It's fairly new, and the website is interestingly not exactly English, but they offer courses in Catalán, art history, and other good stuff, along with Spanish language, culture, and history. Several of the colleges and study centers available through study abroad have classrooms overlooking the sunny shores of the Mediterranean. How good is that! While studying English in school is hindered by too much good weather outside, Spanish is enhanced, it being a language that invites warmth and emotion. Don't believe me? Try it for yourself. Try Barcelona.
