ESL New York

Few cities have as diverse a population as New York City or try as hard to accommodate and assimilate their immigrant populations. No other place has as great a need, in sheer numbers, for masses to learn English as a second language (ESL). ESL New York City opportunities top the list. In short, New York City is the place for ESL. People come to NYC in droves from just about everywhere overseas, just as they have for decades. Their children are studying in public and private schools, academies, colleges and universities. ESL NYC programs exist at every level, and they all need teachers.

The Need. As of May 30, 2005, the NYC Public Schools were looking for 35 ESL teachers (see Nycenet.edu for the Job Search page). How many more are needed in private schools and in post-secondary programs? And in the greater Metro NYC area, extending into New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut? A bundle.

The Qualifications. Qualifications vary from system to system but are consistent with requirements almost anywhere in the United States: valid degrees, experience, demonstrated abilities, etc. Salaries are necessarily competitive. The State of New York offers certification by assessment. See details at Emsc.nysed.gov.

The Training. Colleges in NYC have programs to train ESL teachers. For example, read about the American Language Institute at NYU: Scps.nyu.edu. Another website with a list of university programs in NYC is Eslinusa.com.

Private institutions also train and certify TESL teachers. See Learn4good.com for descriptions and details of their school.

So long as immigrants are allowed into NYC by the thousands, ESL will remain hot in NYC.
