Art Study Abroad

Whatever makes aspiring artists study art abroad, it works. History is filled with the stories of artists who followed their muse to some remote source of inspiration, some mentor or school overseas, and went on to greatness. It has been true since the Renaissance, and it can come true in you through study abroad. Whether your dream is to immerse yourself in the art of France or Holland, or to fill your eyes and senses with colonial architecture in Latin America or Africa, there's an Art Study Abroad program for you.

The same advice and cautions apply to study abroad art programs as for other programs. See them elsewhere on this website. Many colleges have programs and centers overseas, but only those that focus on art connect to art schools abroad. You may have to create your own program by finding an art school overseas and then arranging for your university to accept the transfer of credits.

Let's look at a sampling of artistic study abroad programs worldwide:

  • Florence - Lorenzo de Medici / The Art Institute of Florence: See Studyabroad-florence.com and click on "Schedules & Catalog" and then marvel at the variety of courses available in Art History and Studio Art.
  • Greek Island of Paros - The Aegean Center for the Fine Arts: See Aegeancenter.org and check out "Courses". This program, which has 39 years of experience, also has a school in Pistoia, Italy.
  • Jaipur, India - SIT Study Abroad: See Sit.edu and click on Curriculum Description for a .pdf description of courses.
  • Hobart, Tasmania, Australia - The Visual and Performing Arts Program at the University of Tasmania: Offers credit through Clark Atlanta University in the USA. Travel, lodging, and enrollment are arranged through the Knowledge Exchange Institute at Knowledgeexchange.org. No, there's not a tradition of Australian art. What this school offers is the study of art without emphasis on a particular genre, and at the end of the world.
  • Bali, Indonesia - The Arts in Paradise ARTIS Program: Artis-tours.org offers the study of batik, mask carving, offering making or watercolor with native Balinese working artists. Top that for exotic!
  • Ometepe, Nicaragua: Imagine studying wildlife up close at the La Suerte Biological Field Station (Lasuerte.org). The classes are mostly on ecological topics, but there are unrivalled opportunities for drawing and sketching in the field.
